Q: What if my image editing software does not tell me the pixel dimensions?
A: Most will, but if not, it should tell you what the resolution is. Then you know the maximum size you can use that image in your layout. It is recommend that images be at 300dpi in their final size in the layout and 400dpi if the images include text. Please keep in mind that resolution and physical dimensions are in direct proportion to each other. If you have an image that is 2x2 at 300dpi and increase its size in the layout to 4x4 the new resolution is now 150dpi. So remember, when you bring an image in to your layout you can shrink it down in size (because the resolution will increase) but you will be limited as to how far you can increase it in size.
Q: Is there anything special I need to do for a 2 color job?
A: It depends on whether or not your job is printed in four color process, or as a one or two color job. If you need print one or two colors, it is recommended using PMS (Pantone Matching System) colors, and your colors will match what is shown in the PMS books. This may or may not match what you see on your screen. If color is critical for the piece, you should think about purchasing your own PMS books.
To make sure they print the correct color keep this in mind. If they print in full color or four color process, make sure that when you set up your file, you set it up in CMYK - NOT RGB.
Q: Can you explain the difference between RGB and CMYK formats?
A: RGB refers to the primary colors of light: (Red, Green and Blue), that are used in monitors, television screens, digital cameras and scanners. CMYK refers to the primary colors of pigment: (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black). These are the inks used on the press in "4-color process printing", commonly referred to as "full color printing".
The combination of RGB light creates white, while the combination of CMYK inks creates black. Therefore, it is physically impossible for the printing press to reproduce colors exactly as we see them on our monitors.
Request proofs of your order before custom orders are finalized. You should review proofs carefully, especially of custom brochures or custom business cards, because if an error is made and you miss it, you will have to re-order the entire order on your dime.
Confirm the types of files an online print shop accepts, including whether they accept or prefer files in MS Word, PowerPoint or in other formats like PDF. If you use a MAC check to make sure there are no compatibility issues when sending your files.
Verify whether your store offers tools to help you design promotional printing items for your business. Most offer various tools including custom design services, brochure templates trifold and even custom templates for creating your own business cards.
Tip: Always work with your printer at the inception of a project. Consulting a printer at the early part of a job will usually save you time, money & frustration.
